iPhone 5s And iPhone 5c Already Make Up Nearly 1.5% Of Total U.S

iphone 5s and iphone 5c
Apple’s iOS 7 is really gaining steam when it comes to early adoption, with Mixpanel reporting that it has already passed iOS 6 in terms of traffic hitting its network of mobile sites and apps. Fast software adoption is impressive, but fast hardware pick-up is even more so. The iPhone 5s and 5c appear to be selling well, according to Localytics, having climbed to 1.36 percent of all U.S. iPhones in less than 3 days on the market.
5s vs 5c usLocalytics has surveyed data from over 20 million unique U.S. iPhones, beginning on iPhone 5s/5c release day on Sept. 20 and ending at 8 PM ET on Sunday, Sept. 22 to gather its results. The findings indicate that both devices have had a strong opening weekend, when you consider that the most recent generation of iPads, including the 4th gen iPad and the iPad mini, accounted for around just 4 percent of all iPad traffic a full month after its launch.
Localytics also broke down iPhone 5s and 5c adoption by carrier, and found that AT&T had the highest buy-in rate, with the 5s and 5c making up 0.67 percent of all phones on the network. And probably not surprisingly, given the number of stock outages reported for the iPhone 5s, it is leading the way on the Localytics platform by a fairly wide margin, representing 1.05 percent of all U.S. iPhones, while the 5c trails with 0.31 percent of the total breakdown. Aside from comments on Twitter and other social media sites indicating the 5s was in higher demand and shorter supply, a conversation with an Apple Store employee this weekend at the Covent Garden location in London indicates that the 5s was sold out very quickly, with many 5c units remaining in stock as of Saturday.
5s vs 5c globalThe 5s was almost certainly supply-constrained at launch, but Localytics’ data indicates that it selling out at locations worldwide was down more to demand vs. there just not being enough stock. And while it might be tempting to say that based on these early figures and the evidence from cumulative store reports that the 5c isn’t selling well, it’s worth remembering that the cheaper device is likely aimed at a more broad consumer category that won’t be as concerned with getting their phone ‘first,’ at the earliest possible date.
Apple has yet to reveal its launch weekend numbers, but if history is any indication, it should issue a press release detailing launch weekend numbers sometime later this morning.

How To Use iPhone's AirDrop Feature

airdrop-ios
AirDrop is one of the major new features of iOS 7. If you’re a Mac user, then you’re probably familiar with it. Apple had introduced AirDrop for Mac with the release of OS X Lion in 2011, which allowed users to share files without the need of a Wi-Fi network or any configuration and without the need of storage devices.
Before we show you how to use AirDrop to share photos, videos, contacts and other files wirelessly with other iOS devices, here’s how AirDrop for iOS works:
  • It allows you to quickly transfer files between two iOS devices without the need of a Wi-Fi network. AirDrop works by creating an adhoc Wi-Fi network between the iOS devices, and doesn’t need any configuration.
  • The feature allows you to transfer files only between iOS devices currently, so you won’t be able to transfer files between your iOS device and Mac and vice versa.
  • You can share files using AirDrop via the redesigned share panel. So you will be able to share things via AirDrop from any app that has the share panel. Out of the box, you will be able to share photos, videos, contacts etc.
  • When you enable AirDrop, it will automatically enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • If there are any iOS devices with AirDrop enabled, they will automatically show up in the Share panel. As you can see in the screenshot below, you will see your contact pictures. You need to tap on the Contacts to send whatever want to share.

  • When you receive an AirDrop, you will get an alert with a preview of the photo or video, and with options to Accept or Decline it. If for example, you accept a photo via AirDrop, it will automatically launch the Photos app after the transfer is complete. It shows the progress with a circular animation during the transfer process.

  • AirDrop is enabled by default, however you can turn it off by tapping on the AirDrop option in the all-new Control Center. You also have the option to make yourself discoverable to everyone or people in your contacts.

Unfortunately, AirDrop won’t be available on all iOS 7 compatible devices. AirDrop will be available only on iPhone 5, iPad 4, iPad mini, iPod touch 5.
The feature will be even more useful when developers add support for the feature in their apps. It remains to be seen what kind of files developers will be allowed to use the AirDrop feature for in their apps, and if Apple will impose any restrictions.
It’s one of the coolest features of iOS 7, and we’re glad that Apple has included AirDrop in iOS 7, it has been on our wish list ever since the feature was introduced on the Mac. It’s a pity that it doesn’t work with Macs. We hope Apple will add support in the future.
AirDrop also suffers for the same limitation that is inherent with most Apple services and features, which is, lack of cross-platform support, so you will have to still use the conventional ways such as email to share photos and videos with other devices.

iPhone 5s’ Touch ID fingerprint sensor has been Hacked using a copy of the original fingerprint

iphone 5s touch id
One of the biggest features of the iPhone 5s is its Touch ID fingerprint sensor that makes it much easier to secure the device using the owner’s fingerprint for authentication. The fingerprint isn’t just used for unlocking your phone, but is even (optionally) tied to your iTunes account, which has your credit card information, so it becomes even more important for the Touch ID to function properly, and not allow unauthorised access.
The folks at Chaos Computer Club (CCC) have (fortunately or unfortunately) demoed that the Touch ID sensor can be successfully fooled into unlocking an iPhone 5s with just a photograph of the fingerprint tied to the device.
From their site:
A fingerprint of the phone user, photographed from a glass surface, was enough to create a fake finger that could unlock an iPhone 5s secured with TouchID.
“In reality, Apple’s sensor has just a higher resolution compared to the sensors so far. So we only needed to ramp up the resolution of our fake”, said the hacker with the nickname Starbug, who performed the critical experiments that led to the successful circumvention of the fingerprint lockitng. “As we have said now for more than years, fingerprints should not be used to secure anything. You leave them everywhere, and it is far too easy to make fake fingers out of lifted prints.”
Starbug has also created a YouTube video, embedded below, to demo the whole thing:

The fake finger was created using a 2400 dpi photograph of the fingerprint, which was then inverted and laser printed with a 1200dpi printer on a transparent sheet. Pink latex milk is then smeared onto the sheet, which picks up the printed pattern and can be used to defeat the Touch ID sensor. This technique has been used to defeat most fingerprint sensors, and not just Apple’s Touch ID.
The CCC’s spokesperson Frank Rieger added:
“We hope that this finally puts to rest the illusions people have about fingerprint biometrics. It is plain stupid to use something that you can´t change and that you leave everywhere every day as a security token. The public should no longer be fooled by the biometrics industry with false security claims. Biometrics is fundamentally a technology designed for oppression and control, not for securing everyday device access.”
It could be argued that obtaining a photograph of your fingerprint isn’t very easy for a third-party, but that doesn’t take away the fact that the fingerprint sensor can’t differentiate a real fingerprint from a fake one. To Apple’s credit though, the “Secure enclave” where the iPhone stores the fingerprint information still remains secure.

BlackBerry Stops BBM for iPhone Due To Leaked Android App

BlackBerry Stops BBM for iPhone Due To Leaked Android App – Yesterday, BlackBerry released the most awaited Messaging App, BBM for iPhone in New Zealand and selected other countries. But this morning came with a surprise when some users were going to download BBM for iPhone. Yes, BBM is missing and the reason behind this is the leaked version of Android Application. BlackBerry was supposed to release the stable version of Android App today but the leak version has created some issues due to which they had to pull the BlackBerry for iOS as well.

Blackberry has also posted a blog post regarding this issue and here’s what the blog post says:
“Prior to launching BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the BBM for Android app was posted online. The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day.
Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM. We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability.”
