Despite having a mobile platform of its own, Google has made most of its services available on iOS, albeit a bit late. The company’s latest product, Google Glass, seems to be no exception as TechCrunch reports that Google will soon be adding text and navigation support for iPhone users.
Google Glass doesn’t have an inbuilt cellular chip, which is why it has to tether to smartphones for internet connectivity on the move. While this is possible on both iPhone and Android, some of its other features like navigation (Glass doesn’t have a GPS chip either) and texting are currently only supported with Android devices through a companion app.
That limitation is going to be addressed in the future according to TechCrunch:
Glass, the Google employee told me, will soon be able to handle these features independent of the device the user has paired it to (and maybe even independent of the Glass companion app). While Glass will happily work with any iPhone over Bluetooth or use any Wi-Fi connection to get online, iPhone users are currently unable to get turn-by-turn directions through Glass – one of its killer features. Those direction are pretty useful while you are navigating a new city and they do show off the power of location-based apps on Glass, but the software will currently balk if you ask it to give you directions while it’s connected to an iPhone.
Google is currently rolling out Glass at an expensive price of $1500 to early testers, but it is expected to be available at a much affordable price in the future.
